La Cadena de Amistad serves elderly and disabled Spanish-speakers in the Jamaica Plain area. Our volunteers strive to reduce the isolation that many Spanish-speaking elders feel due to old age and frailty. La Cadena de Amistad services include Friendly Visiting, Medical Escort, and One-time Assistance.
A special emphasis of the program is assisting Spanish-speaking elders in accessing the health care system. Many Spanish-speaking elders become discouraged by the health care system due to the language and cultural barriers that they face. Some have given up on medical care entirely. For them, our volunteers may serve as a translator and advocate, as well as a friend, during what can be a vulnerable and intimidating time.
La Cadena de Amistad gives over 4,800 hours of service annually to Latinos in Boston and Brookline. FriendshipWorks’ La Cadena de Amistad office is located at the Sherrill House nursing home.
